Essential two-step washing process for cloth nappies, wraps, inserts, and boosters. Natural fibres require 5-10 washes to reach full absorbency as natural oils are removed.
• Remove all solids before placing in wash
• Store in a nappy pail or airy basket for 2-3 days maximum before washing
• Wash dark colors separately to prevent color transfer to PUL waterproof items
• Never use combined pre-wash settings - they reuse dirty water
• Always do separate pre-wash and main wash cycles
Purpose: Removes ammonia and initial soiling to prepare for deep cleaning
40°C or 60°C heated wash
Use 60°C for overnight nappies (5+ hours)
45 minutes - 1 hour short cycle
Half dose of detergent
Purpose: Deep cleaning with maximum water for thorough sanitization
40°C (max 60°C)
Always 60°C if washing every 3-4 days or using non-bio
Full dose - "heavily soiled" amount
Loosely full drum (closed fist space at top)
Can add other items to bulk up the second wash
Longest cotton cycle (not eco), highest spin
Eco settings use less water - cotton cycle ensures thorough cleaning
Use liquid/powder detergent with high surfactants
Inserts and fitteds can be tumble dried on low - anything with PUL cannot be tumbled or placed on direct heat source
Use cloth-approved nappy creams only
Never use fabric softener
Avoid Ecover or low-surfactant detergents
Don't use bleach (voids warranty)
Keep away from direct heat sources
All nappies, wraps, inserts, and boosters must follow this two-step wash process. For overnight nappies (5+ hours), always use 60°C for both cycles.
Incorrect washing can cause ammonia build-up leading to skin irritation and rashes. Natural fibres contain oils that must be removed through proper washing to achieve maximum absorbency.
New nappies require 5-10 washes to reach full absorbency due to high natural fibre content.
Natural fibres (bamboo, hemp, cotton) contain natural oils that reduce initial absorbency - these oils are gradually removed with each wash cycle.
Don't be concerned if absorbency seems low initially - this is completely normal and will improve significantly after the first few washes.
40°C / 104°F
Whites, light colors, and moderately soiled items
60°C / 140°F
White cotton, heavily soiled items, and sanitizing
Expert advice to keep your cloth diapers looking their best and lasting longer with proper care.
Air drying is best and prolongs longevity for all cloth diaper items. Items with PUL waterproof coating cannot be tumble dried or exposed to direct heat. Inserts and fitteds can be tumble dried on low if needed.
Leave space in the washer for diapers to move freely. This ensures better cleaning, proper rinsing, and prevents damage to snaps and elastic.
Take diapers out of the washer and dryer as soon as cycles finish to prevent odors, mildew, and maintain freshness for optimal hygiene.
Choose gentle, cloth diaper-safe detergents without fabric softeners or bleach. Check water hardness and dose for heavy soiled to maintain absorbency.
